Cryptocurrency Mining vs Staking

I just learned about cryptocurrency STAKING which might eventually take over MINING, because it uses less energy and hence is more environmentally friendly.

I have a few unanswered questions though.

It seems to stake requires investment while mining does not. 

So can I stake and make money without investment?

The drama was acted out four times to the public and being a non-profit organization, the client have budget only for one videographer.
