GoPro Hero4 BLACK for the Professional Videographer

Image
The new GoPro action camera, released in October 2014, comes in three models. The trio are the GoPro Hero4 Black, the GoPro Hero4 Silver and the GoPro Hero. Top of the range, is the GoPro Hero4 Black , which is the focus of this post. What are the selling features that attracted me? Shoots 4K video at 30 frames per second - professional videographers love this Shoots 1080p HD at 120 frames per second - for perfect slow motions Snaps 12MP still photos Manual ISO adjustment Night Photo and Night Lapse Mode - for crisp dark scenes What features did not meet my expectation? No touch screen like the Silver version 4K video occupies 16GB in just 30 minutes Battery lasts only 1 hour plus shooting 4K Will I invest in the GoPro Hero4 Black? At S$700 (US$500) for a small and light camera, I will go for it. I intend to travel with it shooting time lapse day and night stock footage in 4K 30fps. I may also use it as a b-roll cam for seminar shoots. https://www.youtube.c

Adobe Clip Video Editing App for iPhone

Adobe released a series of free iPhone apps for image and video creation. My interest as a Videographer is the video editing app called Adobe Clip. It’s free, and currently runs on iPhone only with iOS 8. No android app yet. This post is an overview of my favourite feature. The full tutorial is coming soon. http://videolane.com/2014/11/edit-video-on-iphone-with-free-adobe-clip-app/ Adrian Lee VideoLane.com

AdrianLee One-man Multi-cam Videography

Why shoot with more than one camera? Originally, I use a second video camera as a backup. Things happen, and the backup footage saved the day many times. Then I realised the final result looked great…  like a higher budget production with multiple camera crew. The extra footage was also used to cover up all that panning and zooming between the lecturer and the slides. From then on, I used the second cam footage even when nothing happened to the main one. Clients win, as they get a multi-crew production standard for the price of one. How can one man handle multiple cameras? The basic setup uses two cameras. The main cam is bigger and more professional. One that is always with me. I am controlling it throughout the shoot. The main cam is mostly following the lecturer at mid shot. The second cam is smaller and lighter. Even the tripod accompanying it is smaller and lighter. The second cam is mostly wide shot of the stage with the lecturer and projection screen in

How to Set Up a Live Webinar for Training

I was asked for tips on setting up a webinar.  Here’s Part One… What is a webinar? Webinars are web-based seminars with more than 30 participants.  Online presentations, workshops, lectures and meetings. Webinars are interactive between the viewer and the presenter.  Why conduct webinars online? Save money on travel, catering and venue. How to organise a webinar? Set the date in advance.  Avoid dates near holidays to ensure maximum attendance. Set the right time. Avoid timings when your participant will be out of office and avoid having it too close to the end of the day. Set the agenda. Determine the duration and list out the topic.  Include some Q and A time. Select you webinar tool. Test various tools and choose the one with features that suits your requirement. Practice running the webinar.  Ensure you know how to use the webinar tool to run the session smoothly. Send the invitation. Outline the agenda so participants will know if it is relevant for them. How to Record a Lecture and Slides with Minimum Editing

A client asked me face-to-face to propose the quickest way to shoot a lecture with the slides and upload to the web without wasting time editing and with minimum budget. Here’s the situation… the client is hiring me to shoot raw only, and their multimedia production team will edit the final video. Here’s one more thing… they would like to achieve the TED-style of production. Three Ways to Video Record a Lecture with Slides    I gave three proposals… 1. The world-class TED-style production method. 2. The quick and dirty old way of shooting. 3. The ultimate low budget time saving way. Who Will be Watching the Video?   First I asked ONE important question… Who will be watching the video? Internal staff or external customers. If internal staff is watching, then use the quick and dirty old way of shooting.  Why? They have to watch it anyway because the information is more important than the visual-audio quality. If external customers are watching, then you may want to p

Mini Meditation Hacks

Somehow I knew about this, and now it's confirmed.  - “People think the goal of meditation is to empty the mind, it’s not about clearing the mind; it’s about focusing on one thing. When the mind wanders, the meditation isn’t a failure. Our brain is like a wayward puppy, out of control. Catching it and putting it back to the object of focus is the mediation.” -   Mike Brooks, an Austin, Texas-based psychologist, - Incorporate mini meditatations while walking, running, cycling, eating, drinking, or doing a task.  - Focus your attention on one thing. The sound of insects. The feeling under your feet. Listen to your deep breathing.  Taste  your meal.  - When your mind wanders, catch it and bring it back to the original focus.  - “Research shows that a total of 15 minutes of meditating each day for several weeks produces detectable, positive changes in the brain as well as corresponding reductions in stress, anxiety, and an enhanced sense of well-being,” I am goin

Automatically Edit GoPro Action Video with Antix

Accumulating a large bulk of unedited action footage on your hard drive waiting to be edited? Searching through hours of footage to find the best moments is tedious. Antix developed an app to help automatically edit.  What it does: - Controls GoPro wirelessly. - Uses sensors in the phone to track motion during the recording. - Determines when something exciting has happened. - Extracts the exciting moment and posts to user’s profile. Available on the Android first. iPhone version will come later. Audio Compressor, Expander and Limiter Simplified Explanation

Audio engineering seems alien to most Videographers.  But audio is so important in any video that we cannot ignore it.  Here are three audio adjustment filters you must know to make your audio sound better… (my totally simplified definition). Compressor :  Lowers the loudest volume. Raises the quietest volume.  Expander : Raises the quietest volume without lowering or raising the loudest volume.  Limiter : Sets the loudest volume level, so no volume can go over it. Use each or a combination of the filters for different types of audio (voice, music, etc). Questions? Adrian Lee VideoLane.com

How to Make a Quad Split Screen in Adobe Premiere Elements

Image
A "quad split screen" is a video showing four clips at the same time and here's how it's done in Adobe Premiere Elements. I have already imported the four video clips into Premiere Elements. Drag the first video clip from Project Assets panel onto Video 1 track in the timeline. Drag the second clip to Video 2 track. Drag the third clip to Video 3. Drag the forth clip onto the empty space above the Video 3 track. Drop it there and the Video 4 track is automatically created. Note: The higher track will cover the lower tracks, so you cannot see the clips below. Trim the four clips to the same duration. Select the clip on Video 4 by clicking on it. Open Applied Effects panel on the right. Open Motion tab. Change the Scale to 50%. Move the video clip in the preview monitor to one corner. Note: If you cannot see anything in the preview monitor, place the playhead somewhere in the middle of the clips. Repeat steps 7 to 11 for the other 3 clips. Align the c

How to Turn Your Room into a Video Studio

Want to shoot more videos in a shorter time frame?  Turn your meeting room, conference room or bedroom into a permanent video recording studio. Choose a solid coloured wall as background. Do not use real or fake plants as background.  Use 2 or 3 standing video lights. Implement 3-point lighting Technique. Avoid overhead lights as it creates nasty shadows on the face.  Use wireless microphones like the Sennheiser EW 112P G3 . Watch out for humming noise coming from air conditioners and heating fan.   Leave your studio set up where they are, so you can use them over and over. Do you have a similar setup or going to set up one?  Please share. Adrian Lee VideoLane.com

Six U.S. Video Production Companies Allowed to Use Drones

U.S. aviation regulators   allowed six  movie and TV companies to use drones for commercial  video production. DJI Phantom The six photo and video production companies will be exempt from Federal Aviation Administration ban for commercial use of drones provided... The aircraft weighs 25kg or less.  Used within sight of the remote pilot. The pilot must hold a private pilot's license. Flown under 120m in altitude. Flown within the confines of the production set. There is money in drones according to Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International... The drone industry would create at least 70,000 jobs in the first three years. Removing Background Air-conditioner Noise from Interview Video Recording

Image
This week I recorded a video interview at my client's office. The chosen meeting room was isolated from the office noise except for the Aircon blower inside. I could lower the fan speed but cannot totally turn it off. What's left is to reduce the noise during editing. Here's how I did it with Adobe Premiere Pro and Audition... Drop the raw video footage onto the timeline in Premiere Pro. Change both audio channels to the right (because the wireless mic is connected to the right channel audio input, while the left is the on-camera mic as backup) Right-click on the audio of the video clip. Select Edit Clip in Adobe Audition. Adobe Audition will open. Inside Adobe Audition, select a range of the clip where there is no other sound except the aircon noise. Right-click on the range and select Capture Noise Print. Select the whole audio clip. Go to main menu and select Effects > Noise Reduction / Restoration > Noise Reduction (process).

New Trace Animation Effect in Apple Keynote

Image
Apple released the new Keynote in October 2014, in line with its new OS X Yosemite. What got me curious is its new Trace Animation effect. I created a Keynote presentation slide to test the new Trace Animation. On a slide, insert a text box with texts, and go to Animate on the top right. Click Add an Effect under Build In tab. Scroll down all the way under Special Effects till you see Trace. Click on Trace.  Enjoy the the cool trace effect. To see exactly how it traces, slow it down by increasing the duration. You can use the effect bullet point by bullet point.  Select By Paragraph under Delivery. Trace animation works on shapes too, but not on tables, charts and media. Try it yourself and let me know what you think. Adrian Lee VideoLane.com

Adobe Creative Cloud to Release Premiere Pro CC 2014.1

Adobe released an update to its subscription-based Creative Cloud called version "2014.1". The apps updated include Premiere Pro, After Effects, Prelude, SpeedGrade, Audition, Media Encoder and more. Here are some features that I find interesting. User Interface color can now be changed... though mostly shades of grey.  New codec support for GoPro Cineform and BlackMagic 4K Raw DNG... so if you are getting an Action Camera, it's nothing else but GoPro . Multi-colored tags and markers for Prelude, the video logging and ingesting tool... currently only one color. In Premiere Pro,  You can  pick a sequence from Media Browser and view it in the timeline... though its locked for safety (just for viewing and copy/pasting only). A favourite folder in Media Browser panel... for bookmarking frequently accessed folders. Consolidate and Transcode feature in Project Manager... so you can change multiple formats to one single format for speedy smoother editing ex

Adobe Premiere Elements 13 Replaces Version 12

Image
Adobe announced its new version of its basic video editing software. Premiere Elements 13 is the stripped down version of Premiere Pro. New features: "Shake Stabilizer” to smooth out shaky video footage. “Favorite Moments" to mark the best part of a clip, and hence save time on trimming and assembling footage. “Video in Titles” to add video footage into a title. “Effects Masking” to apply blur or other effects to parts of a scene. Elements Live, content by Adobe, with tips, tutorials and contests. Premiere Elements 13 is designed for people who wants to edit videos on their own but do not have the time or know-how.  Tools are developed to automate or guide the user through the process of video editing. Download  Adobe Premiere Elements 13  for Mac or PC. Priced at US$ 99.99 new or US$ 79.99 for upgrade. Is it worth the upgrade?  Personally, I have version 12, and the only thing new and that matters is the Shake Stabilizer.  So I would say for US$79.99, it

What is the Best Video Export Setting for Wistia Upload

Wista recommends uploading video at 1280x720 pixels (at bitrate of 5000kbps), which is the largest resolution it will share. After uploading a video, Wistia encodes and compresses it to various sizes and formats like FLV and MP4, so viewers can have the best playback experience on any screen size, with any connection speed and on any device. The following derivatives are created: 1280px wide HD 2,000 kbps 960px wide MD 1,000 kbps 640px wide SD 700 kbps iPhone 800 kbps HD iPhone (for iPad3) 1,200 kbps The upload file size limit is up to 2GB per file. If you are using other platform that do not encode the video to various formats like what Wistia does, you may face 2 problems... Viewers with slow internet connection cannot play the video smoothly and to solve the problem, you give them smaller file size videos, which leads to the next problem... viewers with better screens and connection will see very low quality videos. My suggestion is to upload at the best quality an

They appear during some transitions, including on the first frame of straight cuts. They occur randomly at different transitions on every export. Troubleshoot - What did I do to solve the problem? Is it the Compressor custom H.264 settings? No.  Tweaked settings to higher quality. Is it the MacBook Pro GPU issue? No.  Turned GPU off. Is it the Render Format setting? Probably.   Turned off timeline background rendering and deleted generated event files.  Export still pixelate. Turned on timeline background rendering and pixelation observed occurring in timeline playback.  Changed Project Render Format from “Apple ProRes 422” to “Apple ProRes 422 HQ”.  Pixelation still occur in timeline playback. How to Replace a Classical Guitar Lower E String

How to replace a guitar string. One end of the string is loose. The other end of the string is tight. Tie the tight end at the bottom. Insert through the hole in the bridge. Give about 3 inches of slack. Make 3 ties nice and tight. Tie the loose end at top. Insert through the hole in the tuning peg.   Give about 2.5 inches of slack. Make a tight loop instead of tying. Wind up and tighten it. I have an old basic starter guitar from Yamaha made in the 70s. Haven't used it for years. It needs cleaning and the lower E string is broken. Clean up the frets. Add bore oil on the frets. Clean the face of the guitar. Get a new set of strings. Use light oil to smoother tuning pegs. Guitar parts. Saddle. Positioned on the face. Higher side and lower side. Premiere vs Vegas vs Final Cut - Fast Timeline Navigation

When editing videos, I want to do it the fastest possible way.  One way is use move around or navigate the timeline quickly.  I realised the three popular video editing software  have their own way of operating efficiently.  I like to quickly zoom in and out of the timeline, split, delete, trim, insert clips and close gaps. Here are methods I found most useful for navigating the timeline on Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas Pro and Final Cut Pro... each using a distinct way. (I am referring to editing with a laptop where there is a trackpad.) Adobe Premiere Pro - Keyboard Shortcuts and TrackPad. The "-" and "+" keys are my favourite for zooming in and out of the timeline at where the playhead is.  Then the "I" and "O" keys to mark in and out a source clip, as well as the "," and "." to insert and overwrite clips onto the timeline.  The trackpad is used mostly to position the playhead and make group selections.  I don't
