The audio for videos, especially videos produced in home studios, always seems to take a back seat to the visual aspects involved in the project. I can see why this might be. It is, after all, called a “video,” which seems to imply that sound is less important. But boy is that a mistake! Nothing says “amateur” to me faster than crappy, echo-y, thin voice audio on a video, no matter how good it looks. I’m betting I’m not alone in this. So the question is: why would you go to all the trouble to make a video look good if you were just going to ruin it with crap audio? While updating my website today, I saw this one-liner announcement with a link to upgrade to Wordpress latest version 3.0. Happily I clicked on the link, activated the automatic upgrade option and successfully installed the new Wordpress 3.0. "Sucessfully installed" was what the automatic software installer flashed on the screen. HOWEVER, my heart sank when I refreshed my website and found it reduced to just one line of message on the screen "Fatal error: .../wp-includes/taxonomy.php on line 289". I tried to backspace my admin control panel, but it also flashed "Fatal error: .../wp-includes/taxonomy.php on line 289". Maybe it was the Google Chrome browser problem. Completed Training a new batch of 7 participants. This is another creative bunch with bright ideas. Look at the video they directed and produced. All I did was provide the skeleton script and act. The guys figured out the rest, from lighting to props. In these 2 full days, I imparted my videography skills. Day 1 was using the camcorder with light and sound. Day 2 was editing with Sony Vegas Pro on PC notebooks. Beyond technical aspects, the course includes storytelling. The art of conveying a message with moving visuals. I learnt how to make 'reverse' sushi at a workshop I shot in a Korean Restaurant. Yes, this is Korean sushi, no raw fish. Reverse sushi is having the rice rolled outside of the seaweed. The secret? Hosting a business network meeting for 35 business professionals? How to ensure the show run smoothly for the whole 90 minutes? Can you remember your lines and say them without a glitch and naturally? Those were the questions and more that ran through my head just before the meeting. This is the business networking breakfast meeting of the BNI Rendezvous Chapter. My role as the Chapter President is to chair the meeting and make sure we follow the agenda. I have conducted such meetings before, every Friday morning, but this one was different. This was our special Visitors Day where visitor count were more than members. Yes, there were butterflies in my stomach the night before and right before the meeting. I did everything I could to ensure my team and myself put on a good show. Look at the video they have created in just 2 days... For 2 days I was tied up in the studio with 7 interested learners. They were a mix of working adults and one polytechnic student. This is one of the best lessons I have conducted. The participants were so full of energy and ideas. The video above was mostly their creative input working as a team. I was only just the actor and content writer while they did the rest. Day one was about using the camcorder and Day 2 the technique of video editing. More than technical skills, there was also the art of creating compelling videos. Video making skill is a requirement in most work places today, Like knowing how to use the computer, one must know how to make a video.
