Starhub 1Gbps Fibre Broadband Review - Installation

15 Aug 2022: Here's my review of the Starhub 1GBPS Fibre Broadband Installation.

Received an SMS this morning...

"Your appointment with our HubTrooper is confirmed today between 09:00 am and 11:00 am. See you soon!"

The trooper came. Did his thing in 10 minutes.

- Unbox a Modem

- Connect to the Fibre Broadband

- Test the speed with a Windows laptop

I signed on a tablet.

Then another SMS message arrived...

"Dear Customer, your Fibre Broadband was delivered to you. Thanks for choosing StarHub!"

The Starhub Fibre Broadband Modem

It's a Huawei Nucleus Connect...

Oh wait, Nucleus Connect is a private company in Singapore whose major shareholder is Starhub... http://www.nucleusconnect.com/company.php

The Modem is a Huawei EchoLife HG8040H5 GPON Terminal...

I can't find it on Amazon... https://e.huawei.com/en/products/enterprise-transmission-access/access/ont/echolife-eg8040h5

What is GPON? GPON stands for Gigabit Ethernet passive optical network... A GPON system consists of an optical line terminal (OLT) that connects several optical network terminals (ONTs/ONUs) together using a passive optical distribution network (ODN)...  https://us.hitrontech.com/learn/what-is-gpon-and-how-does-it-work/

⚠️Anyway, it looks used. Even the power adapter didn't work. The HubTrooper had to go back to his vehicle to get a replacement power adapter.

This happened to the M1 Huawei modem before... internet was cut off just because of a faulty modem power adapter.

There are 4 ethernet ports but only one can be used.

What is the Actual Speed?

The HubTrooper tested the speed on his Windows laptop.

So the actual download speed is only 933Mbps and the upload speed is 841Mbps.

Here's the speed test with my laptop directly connected via ethernet.

I don't know why the download speed is 148 Mbps while the upload speed is 943 Mbps.

The wifi speed through the old Linksys wifi router is the same as that coming from the M1 500Gbps Broadband.

This is the Speed Test result from my Samsung Galaxy S10...

The wifi download speed is 366 Mbps and the upload speed is 253 Mbps

The speed is limited by the old Linksys EA6300  wifi router... https://adriansjournal.blogspot.com/2022/08/linksys-ea6300-ac1200-dual-band-wifi.html

So now I need to look for a 1Gbps wifi router.

Follow Up Actions

Now I have 2 Fibre broadbands connected...

It's time to terminate the other.

NEXT actions:

- Activate Disney+

- Unbox my new Logitech C920 webcam (nothing to do with this post)

- Look for a 1Gbps wifi router.

See you in the next one!
