Scripting for Colbor Pocket COB Video Light

Update 2 June 2024: I realized from the unscripted recording of the unboxing, setting up, and testing, that I just made the complete video. All I have to do is to add the voiceover, opening hook, and call to action closing.

Reminder to self:

- Add Opening Hook (mention 3 key features... and more)

- Add 3 CTAs in the middle

- Add a closing CTA and mention to look out for Part 2.

The voice-over will be a first-hand experience style.

(Suddenly I remembered the idea to assemble and trim the raw footage as an ASMR vlog for my YouTube AVI content. So I did that. 10 minutes long in 4K 60fps.)

===Start of VO===

Opening Hook (to be filled in after completing the middle)

Just tap my phone on this pocket video light and I can remote control the settings. Its 100W power is almost like daylight in my studio. The illumination is wide and uniform without any intense spots in the center. But, will it fit into my pocket? Let's find out!

Introduction

I've just received the Colbor W100 Bi-Color Pocket COB Video Light. Thanks to Colbor for sending me this product for my video review.

It arrived in a shoebox-sized package with a white and yellow design.

What's on the Box

The front shows an image of the light, labeled as the 100W Bi-color model.

One side displays the Colbor Studio app, available for iOS and Android devices.

The other side lists six main features: Super Lightweight, High Brightness, App Control, Ultra-Compact, Quiet Operation, and Beautiful Color Fidelity.

The back reveals the box's contents: Video Light, Plum Tail Cable, Power Adapter, Reflector, Dome, COB Cover, and Warranty Card.

Following this is the Specifications section. See the description below for the updated specs.

Stay tuned as I explore each feature and spec throughout the video.

What's in the Box

Upon opening, I see a Quality Certificate and a Warranty Card.

Following these, is the main Video Light, which has a solid and sturdy feel.

Included in the package are a soft dome and a metallic reflector.

Lastly, there is a power cable and a power adapter.

I found the user manual as a QR code on the warranty card, which leads to...
https://www.colborlight.com/pages/user-guides-downloads, from which I download a 12-page PDF.

Initial Power Up

Now, let's see what this device is capable of.

First, I connected the power cable to the adapter.

Then, I plugged the power cable into the wall AC socket.

Next, I picked up the light and removed the COB Protective Cover.

I plugged the power adapter into the light's power input port.

I pressed and held the power button for at least 3 seconds.

Boom! A super bright light burst out from this compact gadget.

It instantly illuminated my room like daylight.

A small display on the back indicated the color temperature and brightness levels.

The large fan behind the COB light activated in under a minute.

It's worth mentioning that the fan runs very quietly.

Color Temperature and Brightness Controls

Below the display is a color temperature control knob, allowing adjustments from 2700K to 6500K.

Pressing the knob instantly selects one of the four preset levels: 2700K, 3200K, 5600K, or 6500K, which is very convenient.

Above the display, there's a brightness control wheel to vary the brightness between 0% and 100%.

Pressing the wheel directly goes to one of the five preset brightness levels: 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%, with 0% effectively turning the lights off. I would use this more than rotating the wheel.

Wide and Uniform Illumination

The highlight is the COB light with frosted glass, designed for broad and even light distribution.

Testing it at 5600K with 50% brightness confirms the light is evenly spread without an intense spot at the center.

As expected, when the light is moved, the illuminated area follows along.

Upon attaching the reflector, the illuminated area narrowed down.

Adding the soft dome is what I will use most often.

Although the light seems slightly dimmer with the dome, it illuminates a wider area and it is softer too. The shadows, such as those from my hand, are more diffused than without the dome.

Design and Build

The design of this light takes inspiration from a camera.

However, it cannot rest on a surface like a camera because the power cable obstructs it.

The light must be positioned vertically.

On the positive side, it features a quarter-inch screw hole on the side and two at the bottom, allowing for mounting on a light stand.

Most often, I will mount the light on a spare tripod.

NFC Technology

Now, let's explore the main selling feature: NFC Technology.

I placed my NFC-enabled phone against the NFC symbol on the light, which prompted the message "NFC Tag Detected".

I downloaded the Colbor Studio app and attempted another tap.

This time, the prompt suggested opening the Colbor Studio app.

I selected the notification and it launched the app.

Being the initial connection, the app requested Bluetooth permissions.

Following the user manual, I pressed the Wireless Control Setting button to pair the light with my phone.

In the Colbor Studio app, I hit the Plus icon to create a new Scene. Next, I selected the Add Fixture button, then the New Fixtures button.

The model, W100, appeared on the screen. I chose it and then tapped the Add to Scene button.

From now on, simply tapping my phone against the NFC logo will immediately allow me to adjust the light settings without physically touching the light.

Colbor App Remote Control

With the Colbor Studio app, I can control the brightness and color temperature.

I can also select a preset brightness or preset color temperature.

Imagine controlling your video lights remotely, without the hassle of manually adjusting any buttons.

The light can create effects such as flickering flames, pulsating rhythms, and explosive bursts, among others.

By selecting the color picker icon, I can aim my phone at any ambient light, prompting the Colbor W100 to automatically match the color temperature. Isn't that cool?

Cons

This LED can become too hot to the touch at its maximum brightness of 100W.

At full power, the cooling fan's noise is noticeable, but only if you're close to it.

Since there's no built-in battery, it requires an external power source. However, Colbor offers a power grip for portability.

And yes, it can definitely fit in my pocket.

100W Uniform Light

The 100W of uniform lighting from such a compact, portable device, together with the NFC  instant remote control, makes it easy to ignore any drawbacks. It's set to become an essential part of my video production and live streaming toolkit.
