How to Share Screen Audio on Jitsi Meet with Mac Using BlackHole

Jitsi Meet is the open-source alternative to Zoom. Jitsi Meet is free and does not have the 40-minute limit that Zoom imposes. There is also nothing to download and install, except for the mobile version.

It works almost like Zoom except there is one problem. There is no audio from the screen share.

I want to use Jitsi Meet to share my video editing experience via online classes, so audio is critical.

On 7 April 2020, Jitsi added the ability to share system audio together with the screen!

WAIT! You can share the entire system audio ONLY on Windows…

“On Windows, you are able to share the entire system audio, but on Linux and macOS just that of the tab you’re sharing.”… https://jitsi.org/blog/features-update-april-2020/

On a Mac, I can only share audio coming from one single Google Chrome tab.

Sorry… It’s the same problem with Windows too… https://community.jitsi.org/t/screen-sharing-share-audio-with-application-window/33484

So how? My video editing software does not operate from a Chrome tab.

Then I read about Blackhole for Mac by Existential Audio… https://www.gearnews.com/blackhole-is-a-free-soundflower-replacement-for-current-mac-users/

Blackhole is a Mac software that works by bringing the system audio (such as web browser and multimedia) to wherever you want for recording and processing.

After installing, set up Blackhole as an input and output device in the Audio MIDI Setup or in the Digital Audio Workstation.

Download Blackhole from here… https://github.com/ExistentialAudio/BlackHole

Definition from the Developer: “BlackHole is a modern macOS virtual audio driver that allows applications to pass audio to other applications with zero additional latency.”

Lets’s try it.

Installing BlackHole

  1. Download Installerhttp://existential.audio/blackhole/ The installer is sent via email after providing a name and email address.
  2. Close all running audio applications… I just closed everything that plays audio, including YouTube I guess.
  3. Open and install package… follow the very clear installation instructions.

Setting up BlackHole

  • Open Audio Midi Setup app.
  • Setup Multi-output Device…
  • Set up Aggregate Device.
  • Open Sound System Preferences
  • Set Multi-Output as System Output Device
  • Set Jitsi microphone to BlackHole 16ch (Virtual)

Testing Jitsi with Blackhole

I can now stream my computer system sound through Jitsi… BUT BUT BUT…

I cannot stream both my microphone and system audio together.

The research continues…
