How to Record Zoom Meeting with OBS on a Macbook Air

In this post, I document my Zoom Meeting setup with OBS recording.

What is the Zoom Meeting about?

  • A 1-hour workshop on smartphone videography and mobile video editing.
  • The Zoom session is not hosted by me, but by the organizer who invited me.
  • I want to present my training slides and show my mobile phone screen.
Here is the list of equipment used.
  • MacBook Air M1 - The Macbook Air M1 will be the main streaming device.
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max - The iPhone will act as the camera to show my hands-on demo.
  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Android Phone - The S10 is the mobile phone camera used for the demo.
  • Skywater MultifunctionUSB Hub - This hub connects one USB-C from the Macbook Air to the Ethernet cable, the External SSD, and Power.
  • Samsung T3 SSD - This SSD will record the session externally, so as not to slow down the internal drive.
Here is the setup.

Macbook...
  • Connect the USB Hub to a USB-C port on the Macbook Air M1.
  • Connect the Ethernet cable direct internet to the USB Hub.
  • Connect the External SSD to the USB Hub via a USB cable.
  • Connect the Macbook Air USB-C power source to the USB Hub.
iPhone...

  • Connect the iPhone to another direct USB-C port (not through the USB Hub) on the Macbook Air via a USB-C to Lightning cable.
  • Secure the iPhone to the scissor arm.
  • Use the True Visage app as the clean video capture.
  • Point the rear camera at the Phone Camera... zoom in if necessary.
  • On the Mac, display the iPhone screen by running Quicktime > New Movie Recording.

  • Connect an L-shape USB-C power source.
  • Close all apps and turn off notifications and Eye Comfort Shield.

  • Set Output recording path to the SSD, recording quality same as the stream, and recording format at MKV.
  • Check the microphone is set to Default.
Zoom...
  • Show my webcam face before presenting slides.
  • Share full desktop screen to present slides.
  • Mix iPhone screen with slides in a split-screen.

PS: Without a headset, I can record participants voices from Zoom. That means I cannot go far from the laptop.
