How to Create the "X-Ray" Illusion in CapCut

Welcome to this week's lesson.

Boring videos make followers swipe away. You need ongoing pattern interruptions with camera tricks and effects to keep them hooked. Today, we are breaking down the X-Ray trick from my recent Short—a perfect visual hook that requires absolutely no fancy equipment.

Watch on YouTube... https://youtube.com/shorts/C6D0g1DY-IA

Part 1: The Continuous Take

The illusion works because you film everything in one continuous take. This ensures your lighting and body position remain identical.

  1. The Green Screen: Fill your phone screen with solid green. Search Google Images for "Solid Green Background". This becomes your "scanner."

  2. The Action: Set your main camera on a tripod. Record yourself pretending to scan a parcel with your green-screen phone.

  3. The Reveal: Do not stop recording. Carefully remove the item from the parcel wrapper without moving your body, then place it back in your hand. Keep recording for a few more seconds.

Setting up shots like this is where most creators get stuck. If you want the exact studio setups and workflows I use to plan these continuous takes without the headache, they are fully mapped out inside my course: https://adrianlee.gumroad.com/l/vidpro.

Part 2: The Edit

Now, bring that continuous take into CapCut. Remember our core rule: every edit needs a trim. Relying on "zero-trim" workflows leaves dead air and ruins the pacing of the illusion.

Here is how to slice this continuous take to build the effect:

  1. The First Split: Move the timeline to the exact moment your green screen phone finishes scanning the parcel. Split the clip. Apply Overlay to this first segment.

  2. The Second Split: Move the timeline forward to the exact moment the item is resting perfectly in your hand. Split the clip again.

  3. The Deletion: Select the middle clip—the part where you are throwing away the wrapper—and delete it entirely.

  4. The Key: Select your green screen phone clip, tap Remove BG, and choose Chroma Key. Move the color picker onto the green screen and tap the check mark.

Your phone now acts as a transparent window to the second half of your clip, showing the "inside" of the parcel.

Your Homework for This Week:

Shoot this continuous take and execute these specific trims in CapCut. Once you see how simple this setup is, you will start noticing opportunities for it everywhere.

This X-Ray trick is just one pattern interrupt. If you are ready to build an entire library of visual hooks and turn these techniques into a consistent content engine, secure your spot in the full course right here: https://adrianlee.gumroad.com/l/vidpro.

Keep creating,
